Comment of: “You Asked: Are My Devices Messing With My Brain?”
I felt very interested by this article because I’m a teenager and technology addicted. Also, the article is based in scientific research, which gives it credibility.
This text starts to explain that each time there’s a new technology there’s someone who says it’s dangerous for the future. I think he’s right because when something new appears will be more and more attract to it and it could bring to the humanity consequences that we don’t even know.
In one hand, with the social network we stay in touch with people who are not physically present and can be around the world. In the other hand, social network’s notifications distract us. All the sound activate our brain, the problem is that it can trouble our thoughts and concentration.
According to the article another problem is the switch-cost, which means “every time you switch your focus from one thing to another” we lose our direction. I completely agree with that because I am an unconscious’ victim of it, for example while I am studying and I stop to check my phone when I came back to work I have a little trouble to be focus again.
Many people have the phantom’ syndrome and they are always checking their devices. I am an example of it. Also when the gadget has no battery or WIFI we become very stressed.
Those situations could bring us physical consequences according studies. The cortex can be affected; even more, it is most dangerous for young people because the cortex is incomplete.
I liked a lot this article because it touches a current issue of our days, and it has a good expression that is easy to understand.
Hopefully it seems to have solutions to fight this new and modern disease that affect us, like take a walk in the nature, turn off the technology, and do some meditation…
But the point, is will we be strong enough and able to follow those good advices?

This is an issue that is getting more and more common in today’s society and I think everyone knows the answer. Our devices are obviously messing with our brains.
When was the last that you’ve been alone? To be more precise, when was the last time that you’ve been alone for a long time, without the necessity of connect with other people? You are losing abilities, the ability of communicate without any gadget, the ability to reflect, to think. Yes, think, because you almost don’t do that. Nowadays, when someone has a problem most of the times, the solution is search about it on the Internet without even thinking about that.
Besides that, the damage that it can cause in your brain is huge. One of the examples of the impact of technology in our brains is the decrease of attention, focus and the impulse control. The sleep cycles are also affected by bright lights from screens. The phantom vibration syndrome (mentioned in the article) is a really bad problem that is affecting a lot of people and we can simply describe it as “the perception that a phone is ringing, even when they’re not”.
So, in conclusion I think that apart from all the advantages of the new technology, we are being too affected by that in a bad way, so we need to reflect and escape from this.
